….?? at Telegraph Stations

Observatory Sydney

Oct. 8 1860

Sir

Understanding that a desire has been expressed on the part of the Telegraph department to establish Meteorological observations at some of the Telegraph Stations I have the honor to propose as follows –

That the sets of Instruments now employed at the following stations, Albury, Armidale, Bathurst, Cooma, Deniliquin, Goulburn, Maitland, Parramatta, be removed to the Telegraph Stations at those or other places, and that it be made a part of the Telegraph clerk’s duty to take regular observations and transmit a monthly return to the Observatory.

A similar change would not I suppose be practicable with reference to the Instruments at Casino.

By this change a saving of £160 per ?? will be effected, and I am of opinion that the returns would be more accurate and trustworthy than some of them are at present.

Should this proposal be approved I shall beg to be permitted to make a suggestion respecting the money so saved on a future occasion.

I have the honor to be
Sir
Your most obedient servant

John Barker Esqre
“Walla”

Sir

I beg to inform you that your brother the late Dr Barker of Casino when he died held the appointment of Meteorological Observer at Casino and also, that several Instruments, namely
a Mercurial Barometer
a Maximum Thermometer
a Thermometer Stand
a Wind Vane
and
a Rain Gage with glass measure
use[d] by him, are the property of the Government of New South Wales.

I have been directed to apply to you to obtain possession of these Instruments; I should therefore feel obliged, if you would hand them over to “Mr Fawcett” Police Magistrate at Casino to be taken care of until I can make arrangements for their removal.

I have also to inform you that the sum of £5 for Salary, is still due to the estate of the late Dr Barker.

An early answer will much oblige.

I have the honor to be
Sir
Your obedient servant
H. C. Russell
Acting Astronomer
