DAY VISIT
From 10am to 5pm every day except open from 10am to noon on New Year’s Eve, and closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday, you can explore Sydney Observatory on a self-guided day visit without charge or join a fascinating staff-guided telescope/3D space theatre session. See also our special events.
3D space theatre session and telescope dome tour
Our informative and entertaining telescope viewing/3D space theatre sessions are guided by experienced educators who are happy to answer your astronomy questions. What you’ll be able to see through our safe solar telescope is weather-dependent. If the sky is unclear, we provide a fun cosy planetarium session in place of telescope viewing.
Weekend and public holiday 3D space theatre and telescope dome tour (our school holiday program may be different)
11am – ‘The little things’
12 noon – ‘After stars: aliens, black holes and pulsars’
2:30pm – ‘Elysium 7: voyage to Mars’
3:30pm – ‘Space detective’
Sessions are 30 minutes long and include a short Square Kilometre Array information show.
Self-guided tour of building and gardens
During the day, you can explore Sydney Observatory and look at the exhibits on the ground and first floors, as well as enjoy the garden surrounds overlooking glorious Sydney Harbour from the top of Observatory Hill. However if you want to see inside the telescope domes, use a telescope, experience a 3D space theatre presentation and be guided throughout the session by a knowledgable astronomy educator who can answer your questions and provide more depth to the experience, then one of our day telescope-viewing/3D theatre sessions may suit you better.
