WORK EXPERIENCE

Year 10/11 school or TAFE students with a strong interest in astronomy and science are encouraged to book into a 5-day work experience program at Sydney Observatory.

Daytime work experience attendance times: 10am – 4pm.

Night visit: times vary according to the season.

The program outline below is a guide only and, dependent on the programs or time of year, may change substantially.

Day 1
- Introduction to Sydney Observatory, facilities, operations and staff.
- ‘Shadow’ an astronomy educator during a school or public visit.

Day 2
- Book into a night session.
- Study the Sydney Sky Guide to predict what will be seen during night visit.
- Front of house meet and greet and use of the admissions system.
- Explore Observatory Hill and visit the other museums, historic sites and education facilities in close proximity.

Day 3
- Prepare or trial a short audio tour on the main things you find interesting in the gardens or building.
- Research one type of group who visits Sydney Observatory.
- Update or develop a database. This is usually the viewing night.

Day 4
- Prepare or help mail-out marketing materials or update our website.
- Help with astronomy / history research for special program or event.

Day 5
- Finalise previous work and complete school / TAFE paperwork.
