Fantastic new aerial view of Sydney Observatory

Aerial view of Sydney Observatory taken on 19 October 2007

This new image of Sydney Observatory shows much of the work mentioned in the previous post by Geoff: the grounds with its new lawn being readied for new planting and, if you look closely, there is someone working on the north dome (the one at the rear). At the front the white structure is the shade house – a modern replica of the original built in 1865 to make temperature readings. Beyond the Observatory Walsh Bay can be seen with the Sydney Ports’ Harbour Control Tower at Millers Point on the top left.

A big thank you to the person who kindly took the image. How was this fantastic aerial view of the Observatory taken? From a balloon, an aircraft or a helicopter? Any suggestions?

Note added 22 October 2007: For those who have been wondering, the picture was taken by a kind person from the NSW Fire Brigade. The Brigade was testing one of their aerial platforms just outside the Observatory and, with one of my colleagues, we asked if they would be kind enough to snap a picture from on high while they were working. They generously obliged.

A (remote) wireless camera on a rocket.

Wow what an awesome shot Nick! It is so nice to see a different angle. Gives me an idea what our neighbours in the nearby apartments see.

A great idea Michael. I have suggested to my colleagues on a few occasions that we modify the very popular water rockets used at Sydney Observatory during school holidays to carry a small camera as payload. Sadly, they tell me that is too difficult to do.
